How about taking a trip to Germany.
Or you could teach german and the commuity center or locat YMCA.
Or you could find a German speaking pen-pal and write back and forth.
Or you could just find german culture and practice on your own, such as TV, Music, Books, or going to Germantown or community in your local aria. (Chicago great for this.)

There are so many things you can do. I do not know if they have books at your library that are in German but you could start reading books in German. You can try for German pen pals or e-pals. You can try to enter a Yahoo group in German. Try to go on a holiday to Germany or try to find a job over there but maybe there is also the possibility of translation jobs as an interpreter for example maybe there is someone of German decent in you city that like to talk German with you. You could place and ad somewhere to find out

No, definitely no longer. A unmarried worldwide language could decimate global tradition, do away with industries, and fee an unfathomable quantity of time and cash. Not to say, the query of what language could be selected (Mandarin is, finally, probably the most spoken language).

If you want to keep your memory fresh, read books that are written in German. It may be slow going at first, but eventually you'll pick it up again.
As far as a job in the field, try getting into the American Embassy in Germany.

You might try to listen to German radio stations on Internet, satellite or shortwave. Try to join a yahoo! group in German, according to your interests. Try getting some penpals. Depending on where you are in the States, try to join an ethnic club or association of some kind.
For radio stations a good place to start is:
www.dw-world.de
But a lot of stations broadcast in German.
Viel Spass und viel Gluck!
