Hi there i just bought a new parakeet and the first couple days she was shy and skittish too. I found this method worked quite well though she still isnt able to come out of her cage (that takes quite some time just to warn you =]) well first you should try to hang around the cage as much as possible and read or watch tv on a low level or eat so the birds can watch you without them being scared of you. Try not to stare at them because that will make them nervous. also if your birds start blinking at you while you are holding eye contact, that means they are starting to trust you! Then you are ready to slowly put ur hand in the cage but dont do anything. just leave it there. If you birds freak out let them freak out and wait for them to settle. Then take your hand away and do this for a couple days, maybe wen theyre calm enuf even try changing ther food and water in front of them to show you're not gna hurt them. Then once ther used to ur hand try offering millet to them from ur hand. For the first couple times try to keep ur hand on one long end so that the bird can pluck up its courage and pick at the very end of the spray. If they refuse it do not worry! they eventually can not resist the temptation of that delicious treat =] just remmeber not to leave spray in the cage so it would become a valued training tool for you and a anticipated treat for the birds. Soon you can coax your birds onto your fingers by rewarding them with the millet after they bravely stepped on your finger. if it fails, just keep trying everyday and eventually they will start to trust you! Also wenever you're around them dont make sudden movements or talk loudly and also try not to hover over them cuz that makes them nervous too! Also you can go to the library and take out lots of books about training parakeets. I hope this was some help to you!

My family has raised birds my whole life. Some birds, just like people, are skittish. Try interacting with your birds without putting your hand in the cage for a while. Put the cage the room you are in the most (but not the kitchen, there are too many bird dangers there) After they are more used to just being around you, start bringing your hand up to the cage, but not in it. Every day bring it a bit closer to them. Slowly you will be able to work your way to holding them. Take your time. Remember you are a giant in their eyes, that can be scary, Imagine if some giant tried to pick you up :) It would freak you out too :) Good luck

Quit putting your hand in the cage and grabbing for them. For the next two weeks...when they see your hand it should be to give them a treat. That should calm them down.

The more you interact with them, the less frighten of you they will become of you. It will take time.
