There are a lot of examples online, but the best toasts are from the heart with a few short, personal stories about the bride and/or groom, including how they met and your first impressions. One of the best "toasts" at the end of such a piece I've herd went something like this:

"May you live each day like as if it were your last day together, and spend each night like as if it were your first night together."

I was the maid of honor at my sister's wedding, and she also asked me to make a toast at the reception, so I completely understand where you are coming from. I was at a loss for ideas for a long time after she asked me, and I was racking my brain for solutions.

On suggestion I have is try to think of a story about her and her fiance, and use that in your toast. I told a story about how my sister called me to tell me she was engaged, and how I was the only one who got really excited (I yelled "yay" and jumped off my bed and did a little dance, while everyone else was just like "finally!") . And then I said my wish for them was that she and her husband continue to be as excited to be married as I was when I found out they were engaged. It was both funny and heartfelt.

I would also suggest talking to the best man if he plans on giving a toast. If he wants to do a serious one, maybe yours could be a little more funny, and vice-versa. I actually didn't do this, but it worked out that way, and everyone thought it was nice how we "planned" it.

Overall, as long as you plan it out ahead of time, make it personal and heartfelt, and give it some thought, everyone should be pleased with the result.

Good luck :-)

I agree with others that a toast from the heart is best. But sometimes even the heart needs a little inspiration! I have a bunch of speeches/toasts/readings links on my wedding website, maybe you can find something there to help.

Wedding Toasts by Diane Warner. You're library should have a copy.

Best not to get ideas from a pre-fab online list of toasts. Speak from your heart, and your feelings for your sister and new brother-in-law.
