I think it depends on how long you've overstayed, there's a sliding scale which in theory goes up on a daily basis.
If you live in Turkey you can apply for a residence permit either through your employment or if you can prove to be financially self sufficient so you then needn't worry about the visa (saves time at the airport too!)

Do you mean overstay? For UK passport holders a visa is normally multi-entry and valid for three months. If you've overstayed, go to Edirne, leave the country by car or bus and re-enter.
I've had problems leaving Turkey on two occasions. Once because, although I had paid for the visa, they didn't stamp my passport. I just started to understand only English, protested loudly, was taken to the police, who stamped my boarding card with an exit stamp, but not my passport.
The second time was when I had been to Turkey about three times in 12 months. That was in Ankara. She went away, saying that my visa was no longer valid. Having found the other stamps she came back and let me go.
I overstayed in Australia. Then it was 12 months without visa, but I had been there almost two years. I figured, if they wanted to expel you, there wasn't much point in detaining you.

If you enter Turkey, you have to buy a visa on the airport.you can't buy it in advance. it costs now 10 €.
Leave it in your safe in the hotel, because you don't need it anywhere. So you can't loose it.
If you lose your visa in turkey,go as fast as possible to the embassy.
If it is expired,I don't think it will do much. The just look at your passport, then at you, then at the passport again, and put a stamp on your visa. That's it.
A visa in turkey is just a way to make easy money for the government.
