It depends when the adoption took place. If it was a UK adoption before 1974, there's all sorts of red tape, the adoptee has to find you, you cannot go looking for them, all you can really do it put yourself on the National Adoption Contact Register. If it's after that, then yes, you'll need to run name searches against the census, voting lists etc. The person adopted may also be trying to find you, so try Genesreunited.co.uk also

Go to the agency that your mother used for adoption and talk to them about it. They may contact them for you if they are over 18 and see if they want to meet you. It worked for me.

Once you have the adopted name you can use:
Yahoo! people search has helped me find many people.
Putting their name in quotes then into a search engine can give valuable clues.
Looking for them on Classmates.com is another good avenue.

YOU CAN TRACE YOUR ADOPTED BOTHER,IT BECAME LEGAL FOR RELATIVES OF ADOPTED CHILDREN TO FIND THEM LAST DECEMBER.YOU SHOULD CONTACT THE ADOPTION SUPPORT AGENCY.TEL 0121-666-6014,THEIR OFFICE IS IN BIRMINGHAM,UK.THEY WILL TAKE DETAILS AND TELL YOU WHAT THEY CAN DO TO HELP,THEY ARE A FREE ORGANISATION,BUT YOU MUST BE PATIENT AS SOME TIMES IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO FIND SOMEONE AND THERE MAY BE A STOP ON THE FILE AS SOME PEOPLE DO NOT WANT TO BE FOUND.THEY WILL NOT GIVE YOU HIS ADOPTED NAME OR HIS ADDRESS AS IT HAS TO BE HANDLED BY THEM.I AM AT PRESENT TRYING TO TRACE MY OWN HALF BROTHER SO I KNOW HOW DIFFICULT IT IS.GOOD LUCK TO YOU,I HOPE YOU ARE SUCCESSFUL.

Pls let sleeping dogs lie. Do not upset the child, the adopted parents and yourself. Engage in something else. Pardon me.
