As you already know, there is not much agreement on what exactly a spirit is. My guess on this, is that God places what I would call a consciousness, or life force, into all living things. That is not the same thing as a spirit. It is the basic form of living intelligence and energy, needed to function as a life form. The blueprint and battery, so to speak. The scriptures indicate, that the only way to enter the Kingdom of God, is through the aquisition of His Spirit. When we come to God as humble children, and invite Him into our lives, He sends His Spirit into us, and bonds with us. We become new creatures, part mortal, part Immortal. The old values of materialism and fear, begin to fall away. Love and Wisdom, become the foundation of all our choices. We have embarked on the Path of Eternity, and we will never be the same again. The scriptures describe the proof of this transformation, as the fruit of the Spirit. When God's Spirit actually dwells in our hearts, our actions and attitudes reflect that fact. No man or woman, can love their enemies, unless the Spirit of God, is a living part of their being. Jesus said, that unless we are born again of the Spirit, we shall not enter the Kingdom of God. Thus, Spirit, and life force are not quite the same thing, although they are both God's, to do with as He pleases. If you do not have His Spirit, sooner or later, you will lose your life force forever.

I think if it's got a brain, it's got a soul. That lets out single cells. Also, the blood cells, etc, can't live as independent organisms, so they really are just parts of a unified whole. My dog has more of a soul than many humans I know, though.

I like to imagine this in the following way: All living things (right down to amoebae & cells) have are connected via "spirit", or a life-force. In more complex organisms, this "spirit" is concentrated or ponded into some sort of discrete aggregate that some might imagine are "spirits".

I believe the spirit is simply breath and it isn't our soul. It's actually the spirit of life that God gave Adam. Ever since the fall of humankind, the spirit leaves our souls asleep when our bodies die. I believe the soul is our mind and it only fucntions when the spirit is animating the brain. The brain is like the hardware and the soul is like the software. The spirit is the power. Our spirit can get unclean though by unclean angels or can be pure with good angels. They're like our little cellular friends that make our blood (the red blood cells) and the spirit is like the plasma. It's spirit with attitude! LOL To answer your question, I say everything is in conrol by the spiritual realm, but living things on the other hand have the choice to cooperate.

The Bible does say that the spirit of life is shared between humans and the lower forms. It is the very energy that makes living cells work. Your blood is your soul and it dies.

I think this is a very good question - one that I'm not in a position to answer at all (although I've wondered about it). Buddhists will probably tell you yes, Christians will probably tell you no.
As I see it, I'm not really sure what 'spirit' means exactly, but if humans have it, then humans' closest cousins the primates must have it too - interacting with a gorilla gives me the sense that they have something 'spirit-like' too. Down to cats and dogs, which appear to have it too. Burds? Reptiles? Yes, although it seems to me to be in varying degrees. Fish? I'm a little less sure. Insects? Amoeba? Well, it stretches the meaning of the word 'spirit'. But hey, why not? Plants? I really have no idea.
You can either surmise that 'spirit' is something that came about somewhere along the evolutionary road or something that exists in varying degrees between living things.
But I base this on nothing more that speculation...

Yes all living things have a soul (especially James Brown)
Seriously i do believe all living things have a soul, animals etc i believe that my cats have a soul, just because humans have decided they are the most intelligent things on the planet it doesn't mean they are the only people to get eternal life in the summerland, or heaven or wherever the deity in charge of your chosen path gets to send you when you die

i think all living things are part of the spirit. It connects everyone and every thing. As far as the individual spirit is concerned it is like a glass of water removed from the ocean. It is spirit too yet it belongs to something bigger. the spirit is that which lives in us.

I don't think a blood cell has a spirit, I think a blood cell shares a part of your spirit. I think all things have some sort of spirit even if they are not living.
I don't believe in heaven.

God is a spirit.
Everything that exists is of God.
Therefore everything that exists has spirit.
It is not God over there and something else over here.
It is all of God, there is no line where God stops and something else begins.
We live and move with all of creation within and as a part of God.
Nothing else exists. If it is not from God then where could it be from?
Love and blessings. don
