To lose weight requires both a healthy exercise regime, and a healthy diet. Avoid deep-fried and fatty foods, and stick to foods that are not oily or salty or have excessive sugar, and the best way to cook food is to broil, boil, stir-fry, grill or steam.
Jogging is a great way to exercise, and while you should monitor your progress, you shouldn't push your body too hard, or you might end up injuring yourself. It's not really how much distance, but how far it takes until you give your body a workout. A good guage would be your breathing. You should jog until you are slightly out of breath, and your heart rate has increased.
I know this sounds like its not enough, but you must remember that if you don't lose weight the healthy way, it will only come back, and sometimes you might even gain more.
If you start out like this, slowly you will find that you will be able to jog further and further before being out of breath.
Always use running shoes, to reduce the stress of impact on your knees and ankles (jogging is a major contributor to problems with the knees).
Also, recent studies have revealed that resistance-training (building up muscles, e.g. lifting weights, etc), play an even bigger part in helping your metabolism (the rate at which you burn energy) increase, and hence help you lose weight/keep fit.
So your exercise routine should be a good mix of cardio (jogging, aerobics, etc) and resistance training. It is recommended that you exercise at least 3 times a week, for about 20minutes each, until you are slightly out of breath.
Please remember to stay properly hydrated before, during and after each workout.
To help you stay motivated in your diet, you should probably know that when you lose weight, your fat cells will shrink, but they hardly ever get destroyed. And eating too much will cause new ones to form.
I hope all this information helps you. Good luck!

To lose weight healthily you would want to do excersize 3 times a week for 30 minutes minimum and it must make you break a sweat...then walk 30 minutes on the other 4 days. Change of eating style etc is also important. Balanced meals 40-30-30 percentage of carbs-fats-protiens...like the Zone Diet.

wat u can do is get up early in the morning every day and go for a 2 hour long jog/run and eat healthy and if u struggle with keeping at a healthy diet wat u can do is just think of it this way= if u eat healthy and run 2 hours a day for the next 3 weeks u will see and improvement.and with the eating (if ur metabolic rate is really slow) wat u can do is have a snack every 3 hours the snack should be like a piece of fruit or vegetable. this will make ur metabolism faster and that means u'll burn fat faster.
hope this helps.
oh and if u find it too hard to run for 2 hours a day u can start the first week at 1 and a half hours of super fast walking.
Make sure ur go to a doctor and check that this is ok for u.

You are most likely out of shape so don't worry about the time at first. Start with 2km. Add a km every week until you are up to 5km. Slowly work increase your speed. You will burn lots of calories in 30 minutes. Good running shoes are essential.

You really don't have to run. Walking is almost as beneficial. You still have to watch your fat and calorie intake but not exactly diet. My neighbor lost almost 70 lbs doing this. Good Luck!
