a few years ago I put up some metal fencing which had previously been galvanised.I left it for one year to "weather" and the next year i painted it with black hammerite .After every winter the paint flakes off especially on the hollow parts. What can I paint it with to make a permanent job which will last a few years?

Try using 'PLUBATE PRIMER'

It will help to lightly abrade.

Main trouble with any Black Paint is that it absorbs the heat/sun like mad, so if the surface is poor, it will flake.

Rub down with steel wool, and ensure no grease or oils on the metal, and it is totally clean.

Use a good metal undercoat: best used to be Red Lead Oxide, you can still get it, but it does not contain lead.

Then any metal paint for outdoors, but try a lighter more reflective colour, which will give you a longer life.

Go to the local lumber/building material store and buy some metal roof paint. It generally comes in 5 gallon buckets, has a lot of tar-like content and is made for this purpose.

You needed to use a "GalvaniZed primer" first. No paint will adhere to gavaniZed metal.
