Along the road from Phnom Penh to Siam Reap we saw in front of homes these structures of different heights and widths that looked like haystacks with a stick poking out of the top. What are they and what purpose do they have?

those haystacks are for cows to eat when summer!

there are 2 types: the ones that are built up around poles are hay, food for cattle. the ones that are just piled up are whats left over after a rice harvest and they are spread out daily to dry and piled up a covered at night or when it rains [to keep them dry] then they are use to burn in cooking fires. i just love riding through tinny villages w/ golden hay stacks in the early morning sun. it's like traveling through medieval times....hope you took pictures

Now, they are fodder for livestock.
