No - that is an excellent time - not too hot, prior to rainy season. There are no states south of California! But, if you intend to see other southern states, they should be fairly cool then, with no real weather problems. If you get East of Texas, the possibility of Hurricanes does exist.

The weather is hardly ever "extreme" by out-of-staters standards, but do come prepared for possible rain. In other words, have $5 in your pocket to buy an umbrella, just in case you need it. Winter is our rainy season here, but isn't usually bad in October and November.

If you're travelling south from California, you'll be in Mexico. But even if you meant Arizona, Nevada, or New Mexico, don't anticipate much rain there either.

For October and November weather, you'll want to have long pants, t-shirts, and a sweatshirt. Do bring a jacket if you'll be camping or if you're headed to the Sierras (which you should do!)

Along the California coast (both north and south), October is often the most beautiful month. Warm (but not too warm) and sunny during the day, cool at night, with little of the fog that you get during other parts of the year. The rainy season usually starts sometime in November.

California has a diverse climate, so WHERE you're going will make a difference.
Los Angeles in October/November is generally a lovely time of year. It's cooler that time of year. so it's very comfortable. Occasionally "Fall" can be rainy, but there's no way to predict what it will be like this year this early on.

Happy traveling.

It would be a problem if you want to visit the mountainous areas of California. Many of the mountain passes are closed by snow from October / November through to the spring.

That's probably the nicest weather, not too warm or cold, at least Southern Ca. You might not have snow in the mountains if you were thinking of skiing though.

It might be in Florida, but not in California as far as I know. That's on the west coast.
