With to days technology glasses are made with no imperfections. The CO2 in the lager needs a rough surface for the gas to cling to- to release bubbles and make a pint look more appetising. The makers of the glasses and the breweries got their heads together and came up with the embossed glasses. It will only work if the glass is CLEAN and DRY. Scratching the bottom of a glass on the inside with a piece of wet and dry paper will have the same effect. Beer does not have bubbles in it therefore you must be drinking LAGER. You are also drinking with your eyes because you do not need to see bubbles rising to have a good pint. If you drink out of any glass that has bubbles clinging to the sides of a glass then you are drinking out of a DIRTY glass. Keg beer such as tetley smooth and john smiths smooth should NOT have bubbles in them, even though there is gas in the beer, if they do, then same again DIRTY glasses.

Dissolved gas in the beer (mostly carbon dioxide) requires "encouragement" to move from the liquid phase (dissolved) to the gas phase (bubbles), and the rough surface of the embossing acts as an anchor for randomly trapped CO2 molecules to attract (by cohesion) other CO2 molecules, until a bubble forms with sufficient bouyancy to float away.
That was more than you wanted to know, I'm sure!
Cheers!

It doesn't keep it fizzy, but it does cause bubbles to form and hence for the beer to appear fizzier for a short period of time until it goes flat (faster than without the embossed stamp).

It doesn't keep it fizzy. The stamp creates a little bit of friction in the glass, causing the CO2 to come out of suspension. This causes that trail of bubbles.
The same principle works with ice cubes.

its a gimmick the only way you keep the right or perfect pint is when the beer glass is cleaned right, the lines in the Cello are cleaned regularly and it is poo red right.
the only thing that might work are the hit taps and that is only cos they produce smaller bubbles so less gas can escape from the top of your pint hopefully it you finish your drink!

In lamens terms its kinda like a built in wigit, the bubbles react when they pass over it and appear to fizz more
