Most motorcycles have a 5 or 6 speed sequential manual transmission. Sequential means that instead of setting the shift to a certain gear, you move it up to get the next highest gear and down to get the next lowest.
Scooters usually have an automatic CVT (continuously variable transmission). This uses two cone-shaped pulleys instead of gears.
