I understand what the MB size of RAM chips portray, but what do DIMM and DDR and DDR2 and DDR400 and all that junk have to do with the price of tea in China?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIMM [different voltages, pinns, 64 bit vs. 64 bit SIMM]

Double data rate, in computing, is a type of computer bus; one common application of this is DDR SDRAM, the most common type of RAM in new computers. (becoming obsolete)

DDR2 SDRAM or double-data-rate two synchronous dynamic random access memory is a computer memory technology. It is a part of the SDRAM family of random access memory technologies, which is one of many DRAM implementations. (higher latencies, higher bandwidth, generally)

ddr-400 is the mhz rate.
