It is thought that some of the processes that produce black holes emit gamma ray bursts. Also, some neutron stars may produce periodic GRBs.

Computer modeling has shown that the energy production IS possible. What was missing in earlier theories about GRBs was the fact that the energy is emitted in a very narrow beam. It's nearly inconceivable how anything could spray that much energy in all direction, but it becomes understandable when you realize that a lot of energy is being focused into a narrow beam.
