Because they live there now and they are rich and famous and can pick and choose who they want and don't have to take no crap from no one about who they have in their country. the current population only have squatters rights. Actually the native Americans are the real owners of America and all the Europeans, my countrymen included invaded and pushed them out, so ok I'm not proud of that.. so what shoot me? nothing I can do about it now is there...

I love the answers you've received so far. The good answers, that is.

If you want to know the answer to this question, all you need to do is go to any US government website that discusses immigration and see for yourself.

The reason it's become more strict, as already stated, is because of September 11, 2001.

Another reason is because of the huge numbers of people that want to immigrate to the US.

There are limits on how many new LEGAL immigrants come to the US each year.

They also have to divide it up between countries, to give everyone a "more even" chance of gaining their visa.

It's a long process, and it's not a perfect one either. Imagine what would happen to the US economy if they accepted them ALL at one time?

You can call is strict, unfair, too complicated, etc., but there is way more involved in the process than just taking people in. What to do with them when they arrive? How do we feed them? Where do they get a job? A home? Etc.

Anyone who claims the system racist is an idiot. They obviously don't know the facts.

It is very complicated; with political, economic and security reasons. Generations ago, when my grandparents came over, there was plenty of room and jobs for all of those willing to work. Not so today. We are in competition with a global market and must keep the jobs in country. Since 9/11, the security thing is obvious. Politically, politicians use immigration as an issue to try to get votes. They are either for free immigration or against it depending on the state they are trying to get votes from.

Because they came there and took it long ago and now it's theirs and they don't want anybody else to have a piece of it. No I'm kidding. Illegal immigration is a big problem down in the southern states. Why they’re making it harder for legal immigration though, 9/11 was a big influence there.

Calm down mate, the immigration rules have been revised and have become more strict in the USA since 9/11 and all other countries should be the same inculding my own country England.

I think its a bit hypocritical but then there is a lot of hypocrisy in America. They love going on about "You British mistreated the Irish" when their own ancestors did EXACTLY the same to the native American Indians! Its all a bit selective with America I find.

Good point, lets let anyone into the country shall we, regardless of health, criminal records, ability, qualifications. Doesn't matter if a guy wants to enter the states who has hepatitis a and is a convicted rapist who is out of prison earlier. I know lets also let in loads of families just to make sure we can add pressure to the already overcrowded schools and infrastructure. Good thinking.

people do not look at it that way,
"Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children."
================================
From the 1927 Grand Council of American Indians

"The white people, who are trying to make us over into their image, they want us to be what they call "assimilated," bringing the Indians into the mainstream and destroying our own way of life and our own cultural patterns. They believe we should be contented like those whose concept of happiness is materialistic and greedy, which is very different from our way.

We want freedom from the white man rather than to be intergrated. We don't want any part of the establishment, we want to be free to raise our children in our religion, in our ways, to be able to hunt and fish and live in peace. We don't want power, we don't want to be congressmen, or bankers....we want to be ourselves. We want to have our heritage, because we are the owners of this land and because we belong here.

The white man says, there is freedom and justice for all. We have had "freedom and justice," and that is why we have been almost exterminated. We shall not forget this."

our ancestors came here legally. They did not come here and get welfare, food stamps, rape, and steal, or demand that the people already here speak their language, in my case German. That is the difference. Welfare and food stamps did not exist, and we had to work and earn our way and were honest law abiding citizens who didn't come here, wave around a foreign flag, say our rights were being violated by the US and start demanding free health care and all other kinds of free handouts.

Jenny,
Ask the native americans whether the original immigrants came here legally, and didn't rape or steal, didn't impose their language or wave their flag.
