What's the best way to handle telemarketers. I never buy anything by phone and they get pushy and pesky.?

Hanging up doesn't work.... they just call back later. I'm looking for a permanent solution. Call blocker doesn't work either.
They are relentless and persistant.

ask them to wait a moment then every 5 minutes come back to them and say you will be there in a minute, they have to complete a certain number of calls in an hour so they cant wait long.

ask them for their home number to call them back later when they are having dinner.

pretend you homosexual and make indecent propositions to them

say your unemployed ask them for a job

read them poetry

demand to speak to their supervisor and report them for propositioning you tell the supervisor you are not gay

buy an answering machine

Either say to them "Can you just hang on a second, I've got to turn down the cooker." than put the phone on mute and walk away from it. Leave for 10minutes, then put the phone back on its cradle. If they come back, say "Can you...", etc. I have much more patience than them.

Alternatively, turn the radio up or go into a room where the TV is on and shout and argue really loud with a non existent family member to "Turn down that f$%£ing racket, some f^&^^er is try ing top talk to me on the d%^&*&ing phone". Going in the kitchen or slamming a few doors or rattling cutlery works. Keep this going for about two minutes or until you get bored, then be nice as pie when you reply "Yes, dear, what can I do for you?". Whenever they start talking, slowly tuirn back up the volume on a radio and then go beserk again whenever you feel the need.

I've killed a cat, shot a dog and thrown out the lodger several times using this technique. My granny has died a few times as well, even though I've not got one.

They no longer become stressful, you'll actually end up begging them to call! Just make sure it is marketeers first! You don't want your real granny having a coronary.

Tell them about the state law that says telemarketers can be fined, both the person calling and the company they work for, by continuing to call after you have asked them to stop.
If you get the "okay we have taken you off the list but you might still receive phone calls for a few more weeks till all the lists are updated" Remind them again about the law and tell them there had better be NO phone calls starting at the moment you hang up the phone.

Works for my parents, I've tried it myself and I do still get the rare one after telling them all that. I just repeat the message and no more calls.

I also do this...when I see the caller ID come up with the number i answer..National Security Agency......then get stern with them for tying up a resource of national security. They never call back. And, you end up laughing your a ss off.

Someone has got to do that job to put bread on their table so just be polite and tell them you are not interested.
If you find it irritating,how would it make you feel being placed in their shoes without a single sell for the day,being humiliated,shouted at....?

If despite your friendliness,you still get those annoyances try having your number enlisted private from your telecompany,that should settle those daily disturbances.

They aren't bad people,they are just people trying to earn a living.

You've pretty much been answered, I just want to agree with the last comment somewhat:
I feel bad at times too, I mean, they are simply people doing their job and they probably know how much everyone hates them. But, yes, we do have to do something about it - I learned that the hard way - after I close to $500 to one. Not all of them are good people, some know what crap they're giving us and how much money they're stealing, or planning on stealing, from us, but they do it anyway, to make money for themselves. I guess we just have to know which ones are honest and which ones are not, not that I think that's possible.

National Do Not Call Registry.....

It's a federal law that prohibits telemarketers from calling or else they get a very stiff fine.

There is a site called donotcalllist.com and it does work. Or call 1-888-328-1222 it works on your home phone or cell phone

You can try to contact your phone company and they can "install" a recording on your line that announces "This customer does not accept calls from telemarketers, if you are a telemarketer, please hang up now. All other callers, press 1"

My phone company does this for free.
