When we see someone else yawn the conscious part of the brain thinks about yawning and this makes it send a message to the breathing centre. The message from the cortex causes the breathing centre to trigger the yawn response. It is possible to override this response and stifle the yawn but it isn't always easy to do so.

No i don't think so. Because yawning could be an indication of tiredness, stress, over-work, or boredom. So if you're not feeling any of them, you'll not yawn even if you see someone yawn a hundred times

Best explanation I heard was that we are all descended from monkeys. When one of the group goes to sleep, they all go to sleep. So the yawning is a sign that the group will shortly be taking a nap. Neat eh!

No one really knows but I read something about this not too long ago and some folks have theorized that it is a throw back from when we lived as apes together and it was a way of empathizing with the other troop members. I personally think that sounds like a load of crap but it was an interesting try at it. :) Best of luck finding out.
