Those two plays by Shakespeare along with Troilus and Cressida and of course, Merchant of Venice, are considered to be problematical. What do you think of Measure for Measure and All's Well that Ends Well?

(Personally, I find some of the characters such as Pompey Bunn to be hilarious.)

I have always had issues with "All's Well that Ends Well," for the same reason that I have issues with "The Two Gentlemen of Verona." Bertram and Proteus are very similar protagonists, in that both of them are utter BASTARDS for much of the play. Bertram ditches Helena when he is duty-bound to wed her in return for her healing of the King, and Proteus tries to seduce (and, later in the play, to take by force) his best friend's woman. They're just bloody awful. And THEN, late in Act V, they both say (in essence) "Gee, I'm sorry"...and all is forgiven. Very, VERY hard to make that kind of 11th-hour recantation work in performance.

Give me the entertaining and morally complex "Measure for Measure" any day.

To me, "Measure For Measure" is a vastly better play than "All's Well". The level of writing is much better, the moral ambiguity is very complex to the point of almost being dangerous, the comedy is still very funny--"Measure" feels strikingly contemporary in thought. And I should say, having seen both in performance, "Measure" plays very very well.
