Most large SUV's are built off of the same chassis as a truck. Engine, transmission, suspension, are usually exactly the same as a full size truck. Smaller suv's are built off of car chassis, which share much more in common with a minivan.
Easiest way to tell in my book is, If the SUV is rear wheel drive it is more truck, if it is front wheel drive it is more van.

Some SUVs have a stronger and stiffer frame. Other SUV have a stronger body omitting the lower frame rails. The result is a lower center of gravity and more car-like handling.

It is according to what it is. Large SUV's (HUMMER, Chevrolet Tahoe, and Cadillac Escalade) are more like tough trucks. Small SUV's (Kia, Honda, Suzuki, Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Toyota, Nissan, Dodge, and Jeep) are like mini-vans.

It's more like an overpriced gas-guzzling station wagon.
