Someone told me today that something she was trying to do was like a heffalump trap.
The only thing I can think of is that you go round in circles and find nothing.

Fans of A.A. Milne - it's a great sadness to me that I never really managed to interest my own children in the Christopher Robin books - will recall that a heffalump trap is a pit that you dig for a heffalump, and then fall in yourself.
Yesterday William Hague dug a beautiful heffalump trap, scooped it out, stuck sharpened stakes in the bottom, covered it with branches, leaves and moss, paused to admire his work, then walked slap dab into it.

Heffalump Trap

They're black,they're brown, they're up, they're down
They're in, they're out, they're all about!
They're far, they're near, they're gone, they're here!
They're quick and slick, they're insincere!

Beware! Beware! Be a very wary bear

A heffalump or woozle is very confusil
A heffalump or woozle's very sly!
They come in ones and twosles but if they so choosles
Before your eyes you'll see them multiply

They're extraordinary so better be wary
Because they come in ev'ry shape and size
If honey's what you covet, you'll find that they love it
Because they'll guzzle up the thing you prize

Beware! Beware! Be a very wary bear

A heffalump is a fictional creature mentioned in the Winnie the Pooh stories.....In the books, Pooh and Piglet attempt bravely to capture a heffalump in a trap. But no heffalumps are ever caught in their trap, and indeed no heffalump is ever met with in the course of the books

Gotta love Winnie the Pooh!

A long time ago I visited Disney World in Orlando, Florida. On one of the rides, as we were passing a sculptured elephant, my eldest daughter was asked, "What's that?" Since she was 13 and had already ridden elephants in India, with great scorn she replied, loud and clear, "It's a heffalump." The USA interrogator was, thankfully, momentarily, speechless.
The ultimate heffalump trap!

a heefalump trap, is a pointless waste of time..... I.e. there is no such thing as a heffalump hence no point in making a trap!
