Think about it! They:

ARE QUIET!
Don't leave big messes.
Don't have to be walked or excersized.
Can stay out in any season, rain or shine.
They eat grass and plants!
Won't run away (or if they get out of the backyard, they can't get far!)
Accesorize with any outdoor lanscaping, like rocks and shrubs.
Have no need to come indoors and probably don't want to.
They live forever if taken care of properly.
Won't attack you and the kids love em.
No toys to buy or special housing.

Cool huh? Now if I cand find one....

They also...

- Cost over $1000 for a healthy baby
- Are among the most rigidly regulated animals on Earth
- Eat several pounds of a wide variety of food a day and can have weekly food bills around $25-50. Grass and plants is NOT enough!
- Require high heat, and either almost no or very high humidity depending on the species
- Require a big exercise area- they DO like walking and exercising!
- Routinely escape captivity. Tortoises are amazingly good at escapes, and strong enough to break a lot of kinds of fencing. Once loose, they are incredibly good at hiding.
- Require easily access, rodent-proof heated shelters for cooler weather, rainy days, or to take the night chill off.
- Have been known to bite, and can be quite savage biters. They DO eat meat if they can get it!
- If they decide to burrow somewhere, or break through a fence, or whatever, little can stop them.
- Veterinary care will be costly, IF available
- If you need to move one, they are really, really hard to work with!

Good luck!

Wrong!
I don't know about giant torts specifically but other torts do vocalize, sometimes loudly, during mating.
Giant tortoise produce HUGE amounts of poop.
It is very important for giant torts to have a large pen that they can walk around & get their exercise. Some giant sulcats have been known to tear down fences or go through sheetrock walls. They are strong!
Escaped torts have been found MILES away from home.
All giant torts are tropical species and can not handle freezing temps so they must have a warm area to come to during cold weather.
Although torts won't attack, they are not the smartest animals and sometimes mistake common objects for food. Galopagos giant torts have been known to try to take a bite out of hikers clothes especially red items.

I would never suggest a giant tort for anyone who could not provide a large secure pen, lots of money & a warm winter home/pen. If you can handle these, they do make very intersting pets!

He he he don't put any tortiose in the sea it'll drown. I love my tortiose, but they make HUGE gooey messes so you lost on that one. You need to have buried fencing because they'll dig out. They will also climb up corners. They think they fit through any hole they can see through so chainlink isn't good. To much rain can hurt some species. Unfortunately in th Americas you either have winters too cold or you have fire ants which WILL kill tortioses. It is possible to build an outdoor winter shed thats heated or get a hibernating species though. I don't think any hibernators get giant do they? Lastly Fresh lettuces and veggies year round are a fortune you need a green thumb and a garden to help this. If you want one though I'd suggest a breeder. I got two for less than one at a pet store. Good luck

In his way Stalin was another Hitler, and Stalin lasted longer in power, and died of old age, still in power. Stalin was in charge of Soviet Russia, a very powerful nation. Since that time there have been several dictators in charge of nations which have had wide influence, e.g.Ghaddafi in Libya (small nation by population, but big influence because of oil), Mao Tse Tung in China and Saddam Hussein in Iraq (oil, again, and look at the chaos in Iraq since he was deposed). Nobody can predict the future, but I would not be surprised to find a dictator in a similar position to Hitler at some time.

Yes...there could be...... as long as people ......"demonize".......other groups of people and as long as leaders/powers that be...... use this to divide us and serve their agenda they give us something to blame for our problems ....while they do what they do Hitler was elected just like Clinton, Bush and Obama....etc. He used the political process to get his foot in the door and then began to discredit the opposition Just like Clinton, Bush , or Obama...etc. Kodak, Bayer,Coca Cola, Standard Oil "Rockefeller",Chase Bank. IBM, and Random House Publishing helped the Nazi cause (there are more.....look it up) Just like Big Corporations help Clinton, Bush and Obama....etc Don't be as naive as to think political agendas are not ultimately connected/tied to money

Sounds good. It wouldn't stay out there in winter would it? I think I'd get a small one in a tank indoors.

The best backyard pets are those animals that adapt our home as their natural habitat. Please, let us give animals freedom to live, grow, and thrive in their natural habitat. Tortoise belongs to the sea, their special housing.
