Maybe the teams got to be so big and successful due to the large numbers of fans coming to their games, supporting the team and providing the cash through tickets sales. Admitidly, now there are these superclubs (well managed and run as true businesses) there does appear to be the glory hunter fans adding their support. But I still and always will support Everton!!

In the UK, it's a reflection on the changes in society over the last fifty years.
Up until the 1950s many people lived their whole lives in the same town or city and travelled very infrequently. A good example is Liverpool; which began to draw supporters from Warrington, Widnes, and further afield in the early 1960s. A large part of this is that it became easier to get in a car and drive fifteen miles to see a winning team rather than staying in Bury or Wigan and watching a smaller local side.
The expansion of televised football since the 1980s has also been blamed for a drift away from smaller teams to the big clubs. Given the choice of standing on an (often uncovered) terrace to see the local team or staying at home and watching two teams full of internationals, many people began to choose the latter. Naturally they developed affinities for the teams with the better players.
I personally don't feel that it is as much of a 'problem' now as ten or fifteen years ago. People have started to realise that their hometown clubs are special and important. In Croydon, South London, for example, you see as many children in Crystal Palace shirts (the local team) as Chelsea or Manchester United.
The most dispiriting thing is to see the number of foreign shirts worn by people who 'support' them, having never been to the ground, or even the country, don't speak the language and just watch the odd game on Sky Sports. But despite a rather righteous feeling in football that you should stick to your local team, there are no actual rules to say you have to and there's really nothing wrong with gloryhunting. After all, if they turn out ot be rubbish, like Real Madrid, you can always buy a Barcelona shirt......

"Anyone who does not support the team that they were born geographicaly closest to is not a true football supporter. And should be shot."
lol what snobbery. There are any number of reasons why you might support a team you were not born closest to, and how far down the leagues would you have to go anyway ? A few so called loyal Newcastle fans might find themselves supporting Sunderland or Blyth in that case.
Where your parents are from or what your first match was or a player you liked as a kid are all important factors, and it's maybe more a question of sticking with a team that you followed when you were young which is a truer test of the genuine fan than where you were born.
At the end of the day it's a free country, and I don't mind anybody following whatever team they want, as long as they don't criticise mine that I've been to all 4 corners of the country to see lose.
Besides, with the glory hunters, it's more fun taking the p!ss when they get beaten, because they just expect so much more.

We are not all the same. I support my home team "Wycombe Wanderers" but I still have favourite teams I like to see win and Liverpool is definitely one of them. A few years ago Wycombe got through to the semi-final of the FA cup and we had to play Liverpool. I went to that match and it was one of the best days I have ever had at a football match, and I am 75yrs old. The atmosphere was terrific and best of all so friendly. We walked from the car park with a crowd of Liverpool supporters and it was laughs all the way. What a pity all matches can't be like that. Someone asked me if I would be shouting against L/pool when they played in the final, and I said I would be shouting very loudly for them, and I did, and I still do.

Because football is treated as a product and the big four are the most heavily marketed. In particular they appear the whole time on television - they seem to get more than their share of "Match of the Day" apart from the European matches.
I would have thought it better to support a well run local team, like Charlton or Watford, which is likely to have at least one or two local players and where there is some chance of getting tickets to attend matches.
The biggest teams, with all their executive boxes and pay television, are killing the golden goose that feeds them.

most ppl first watch games involving the big teams, as they happen to appear more often in highly televised and anticipated matches. Of course, it's usual to want to be associated with teams who are popular and successful, regardless of how much a person knows about the history of the game or how intense they support a team. Big teams with good players and successful campaigns bring more supporters...

Some are glory hunters and like what Tomosarse has said they should be shot lol. I'm loyal to my home team and its Chelsea I only live 30mins away on bus from there I've grown up and supported Chelsea.
Some people support other teams coz their home team are crap or 'out of date' bankrupt and are ashamed to admit it. They may just want to be able to support teams where they can win cups and be able to celebrate like when Liverpool won Champions League abd Chelsea won Premiership title.
