I'm American and I've wondered where this running "joke" came from, myself. Maybe we can partially blame Mike Myers, who is CANADIAN, for using this "joke" in the Austin Powers movies. It's odd, and I'm sure you and I are not the only ones who think so.
P.S. I just read other answers, and I wonder if you intended to start such a mean discussion. There sure are some angry Brits out there. And they don't notice when they're generalizing about Americans, either.

I don't know any Americans that have that obsession! This the first that I've ever heard of it. I've never known Brits to have any worse teeth than anyone else! I live in California. Maybe the Americans you are generalizing about live on the East Coast?

Funny you mention this. I've been living in the UK for the past 3 years and i do realise that Brits do have this problem with their teeth. I reckon because it is the system of NHS who is to blame. You ask for an appointment and the first appointment you get is three months away. of course you forget and have to book a new appointment again in 3 months. and if you go to a private dentist he will make sure you spend alot of money. which is discouraging.

Because statistically, on a per capita basis, Americans have better dental health and less dental problems than the British. And since this one insignificant fact is all that Americans have to offer that is not laughable or meaningless, we tend to harp on about it....
