the 'R' is basically a write once DVD, a 'RW' is a re-writable DVD. The difference between the '-' (minus) and '+' (plus) is simply different standards that were developed for recording DVD's in the consumer market. Most players/recorders support both formats. I commonly use DVD-r though myself.
