I have been following the middle east crisis, and it occurs to me how thick some people in power must be. We're 27 days and who knows how many corpses in, and still the politicians won't demand a ceasefire. It's what we all want, isn't it? No one in their right mind is enjoying the fact that innocent people are dying! then why can't the UN just say "Stop it now"?

You know 2 kids under same parents have hard time getting along at times, so it's not too difficult to understand why people of different belief system would want to kill each other.

Still, I agree with your sentiment 100%. It is sad that people can't rise above their nature.

Or else what?

Let's forget all the UN politics, and the fact that the US is unlikely to allow it to intervene, and assume that it was genuinely the neutral organisation it should be in theory, and they unequivocally wanted a ceasefire.

First major problem: the UN can only really intervene in a peacekeeping role if both sides agree to this. Otherwise the peacekeepers would be in GRAVE risk of getting attacked by one side or other (or both). No country in its right mind is going to allow its troops to be put in this position.

Second major problem: in the current conflict, only one of the combatants is a nation - even if an international force was engaged, how would they punish, or even defend themselves against, aggression from Hezbollah? They would find themselves in precisely the same situation as the Israelis, and would have exactly the same problem with civilian casualties if they counterattacked.

So those in power are thinking, well if we send people in our own troops are going to get killed, and we're probably going to end up killing civilians. Neither of these are big vote-winners back home. Therefore I don't think it's "thick" for the leaders to stick to the diplomatic path for now.

Your question is very hard to answer. Let me explain me a bit first, I am white, Buddhist and an American....I see America as an aggressor in Iraq, not as a savior...now they say they may have a civil war there....well, good...but let the Iraqis fight it themselves. Israel and Lebanon...sorry guys, you can kill each other but we're going home....the Romanians, Bulgarians, the Tamils, or the other 40 countries killing off their own people.....let's just stop selling weapons, stay at home and stop this sh*t. The UN has never been a powerhouse because it is a puppet of the US, Russia, France and England....major contributors of the UN budget....do you really think that anyone in the UN listens to the voice of Monaco? I have been in the military and shot twice...it's not fun! But I learned that the way we can get peace is by caring for others, their culture, their ideals, and their lives. We can never achieve that by murder.

More then that: In an Israeli prison there is a Lebanese national who was convicted, about 28 years ago, of terrorist actions. So the question is why can't the Israelis Give him an amnesty in return for the freedom of the abducted Israeli soldiers. The part of your question concerning the UN is more complicated. President Bullshit has a UN ambassador in the Security Council who can veto any decision.

If you have been following it you will know that the whole world has told them to stop. the middle east has always been a volatile area and will remain that way until the people of that area recognize each others right to exist and the leaders of the Arab world do something about the extremist in there midst.

It`s a political and religeous and cultural matter so the first to back down will be admitting that what they stand for will be proved as inferior.

It`s what comes before a fall for most of them.
The UN would be crazy to come down on 1 side or the other because they would be seen as taking sides and probably trigger worldwide reprisals. They also know a cease-fire would be both ineffectual short-term as it has been in the past.

Its Not easy if Israel was no more they will come after the Christians and any religion that is not Islamic. Israel is only the size of Wales look how many people have died since 1948 because of hatred. Gays and human rights activist will not be spared either

Simply saying "Stop it!" does nothing to solve the underlying problems. As long as you have one side (Hizbollalh) who wants to kill all the Israelis, and the other side (Israel) which really would prefer not to be killed, you will have a conflict. Of course, you are absolutely correct that no one wants the innocent bystanders to suffer, but in a war that's inevitable.

How is it so hard to get peace?? Because terrorists don't want peace- it's really as simple as that. They want to rule the world, starting off with 'wiping Israel off the map', then it'll lead to controlling the US..
