Amravati (also known as Amrawati or Amraoti) is a city in the state of Maharashtra in India. It is believed to be the city of lord Indra, the king of all gods. It lies 156 km (97 miles) west of Nagpur, and serves as the administrative center of Amravati District and of Amravati Division.

The town is located near the passes through the hills that separate the cotton-growing regions of the Purna River basin to the west and the Wardha River basin to the east. Amravati is a growing industrial center, with cotton mills as an important industry. The town is expanding toward Badnera, 10 km to the south, which is the location of the railway junction where the branch railway line serving Amravati joins the main Mumbai - Bhusawal - Nagpur - Howrah rail line.

Recently, it has emerged as an educational center offering many programs including medical and engineering courses. In addition to Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University, both a Government College of Engineering and a Government Polytechnic are located in Amravati. V.Y.W.S. College of Engineering is located at Badnera.

Amravati finds home for popular hindi-cinema film distributors. Many of them have offices near Jai-Stambh.

Amravati is also known for the famous Physical Education Institution the Hamuman Vyayam Prasarak Mandal (popularly known as HVPM) founded by Late Dr. Shivajirao Patwardhan. This institution was established in the year 1968. This institute trains in most sports, including some foreign sports such as Taikwando. It is located in the old part of the city. HVPM has two large running track and also stadium, an international level swimming pool and two indoor stadiums. Students all over India come to train in various athletic desciples.

The institution was founded as an akhaaraa (Gymnastic Club)) in 1914, by Vaidya Brothers, Shri Anant Krishna and Ambadas Krishna Vaidya.
Amravati district has been traditionally a cotton growing area with the climate suited to textile production. It is also home to "Maaltekdi", a popular hilltop place with hundreds of people jogging in that area. Students and professionals from Amravati are scatterred all over the world and contributing towards globalization.

It also have the historical temples of Goddess Ambadevi and Mahanubhava's Lord ShriKrishna Temple
