Yes, I've noticed that. They used to run a lot of pre-1800's stuff (archaeology, etc.) a few years ago, but now when I randomly turn on the channel, 8 times out of 10 they'll be running "Modern Marvels" or some such.
A year or two ago, they created a premium channel called "History Channel International" , which is part of a more expensive cable package (at least on my service) I think they moved most of the good old stuff to there. Which is too bad, because I can't afford it.

Try the Discovery Channel, A&E, Travel Channel, some shows have been syndicated to other networks..

Also, it depends on the time of day. Some shows are set before the 19th century. Currently running is the series about the American Revolution.

A couple of reasons:
It's American History so there isn't much prior to the 18th century (1700's)
Visuals - History Channel uses lots of visuals like photos or maps, etc. when doing their shows. There aren't a lot of those available.
When they do ancient history - like Egypt or Greece, they show the ruins.

No contemporary film and no photographs -so anything they show must be created, using actors and scenery. Puts the cost up considerably.
