I know it sounds weird, but everyone I have told about this says it works:
Get a blanket/pillows and lay them down in front of a couch - lay on your back on the pillows and put your lower legs and feet on the couch (so you're in a sitting position, but laying on the floor). Get an electric heating pad and put it on your abdomen. I used to take midol for the pain, but it never seemed to help, but this does, I promise!

The "best way" is individual, and not even just individual down to each lady bleeding, but individual down to the time...
However...
Some good general tips for you:
1) Hot Water Bottles are a Blessing! Not only the heat, but the weight can help. Be sure not to burn yourself though, do wrap it in a towel at first, and if you're weak from bleeding, or otherwise feel you'd have trouble filling it, try to get someone to help you.
2) Cats are furry, somewhat cooler hot water bottles! Haha! Plus they purr!
3) Try some tea. Any kind will be diruetic which will help clean you durring this cleansing time, but there are also special teas for your Bleeding Time. Peppermint was one of the first local anethestics, so a strong cup of peppermint may help in pain relief. Some folks find Crampbark helpful, and lavender can be had in tea and is quite relaxing... try a bunch of teas and find your favorite. Raspberry often works well for me, it is good for the utereus afterall!
4) Reflexology... There is a pressure point on the foot which can relieve menstrual pain. You can try online to find diagrams, but you should probably see a reflexologist, at least once. Ask what you can do at home for your menstrual pain. A kind reflexologist (and/or one who knows you can't afford subsequent visits for this issue) will often tell you what you need to know.
5) Deep, Slow, Breathing... imagine Breathing right down into your Vulva... it will relax it, and thus you will have some cramp relief.
6) Work on self love (yes, this can be taken more way then one, haha). If your emotions are running high, and you get down on yourself, you'll get more tense, that's not good, and causes pain. Also, massage down there, in or out, can relax, unless you have issues about that, in which case, don't bother!
7) Drink lots of Water, eat fruits, get some iron in there (beef or beets or spinach and OJ), and avoid processed sugar and caffine.
8) Vinnie's Giant Roller Coaster Period Chart & Journal Sticker Book... check it out!
Hopefully that'll be a good start for you!

Keep your butt warm - wrap a sweater around it.
Avoid caffeine.
Drink plenty of water.
If all of the above doesn't work - try pain relievers.

if you are at home a heated lavender wheat bag is great on the area - also try avoid things with caffine in them when you have period pain (coke, coffee etc) this is known to make it worse.

For me it`s laying down with a heating pad, medicine.. and trying to fall asleep to get away from the pain.
I have horrible cramps, and I have stronger medicine from the doctor because of it. Maybe you should look into it if yours are very severe.

Bay leaf tea. Cheap and effective. Better than a heating pad.
