Legitimate work from home jobs exist for legitimate workers willing and able to work from home. Many companies who offer telecommuting do not advertise the telecommuting until the employee has proven themselves.
I have worked from home for my employer for about 6 years now. In CO a company called Alpine Access has an entirely work from home workforce for customer service.
For as many legitimate jobs, however there are probably more scams. The trick in my opinion is this:
* No "job" should make you pay money out of pocket to them to start working for them.
* If it sounds to good to be true, it might be. They MIGHT be very successful based upon their ability to convince people to ignore rule 1 at the possibility of joining their successful organization-- for these companies it is a matter of time before the truth comes out.
For tips on what it would take to work from home, feel free to ask questions of the Career Transformations group at http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/HFCN-CareerTransformationTalk/

The honest truth is that all of those ads for at home jobs are scams. The best way to get an at-home job is through an employer you already have. Many companies see the value in telecommuting and are offering that opportunity to employees.
Another option is to start your own business. No, not a start-up business you hear about through an ad, a business you build from scratch with skills you already have. Everyone has a skill that's worth something. You can become an consultant in the field in which you already work. You can educate yourself on a topic and learn as you go consulting in that.
Look around and consider what skills you already have and work from there. Can you sew? You can do alterations or custom sew. Can you cook? You can do catering (catering specializing in pharmaceutical representatives as clients is very worthwhile because they always host lunches at medical offices).
Use your wits and your skills and you may just find the perfect at-home job for you.

With a computer at home and internet connection, you can start earning from home, without any investment. You should choose your work at home job according to your skills and time available.
If you have a good typing speed, general and legal transcription jobs from companies like Mountain West, Tigerfish and Accutran are available. Some of these companies do not require any experience.
You can apply directly from their websites which are listed at
http://tinyurl.com/o65rb
Medical transcription work at home is also available if you have completed a course and have relevant experience.

BurnLounge--have your own personalized online music store. Invite family, friends or anyone to browse, sample and buy music. I have a store at http://burnlounge.com/mlbliss and I enjoy doing this!!
BurnLounge is a fantastic new deal on the internet! They just started in November 2005 and have grown quite rapidly since. They have music sites now, but will be adding ringtones, movies, DVDs, video games, concert tickets, audio books and other things later.
They also allow new (or old) musicians the opportunity to distribute their music with them and they offer people the opportunity to have their own online music stores. BurnLounge is contracted with the top 4 music marketing labels, which makes everything they have online LEGAL to download.
If you would like more information, please feel free to send me an email and I will do what I can to help you.
My site is http://burnlounge.com/mlbliss and you can also research them at http://corp.burnlounge.com and http://help.burnlounge.com

Medical Biller....
Basically, if you have a home computer and printer, you print and send medical bills out from home. I have a friend who does it. She is a single mom and she makes around $3000 a month. Not alot, but helps her with her bills.
