Folic acid is one substance that we need for our metabolism as iron and vitamins.
During pregnancy, some scientifics proved that women that are taking a folic acid supplement of 400 mg helps to prevent bifid spine, a disease that causes problems in the spine bones of the babies.
Even if not universally accepted, it is advised to add this supplement at least during the first trimester.
Watch out with over the counter vitamins, not all of them are good for pregnant women.
If you cannot find the folic acid alone, then consult your doctor to ask if you can take another supplement and be sure he/she gives you a name you will be able to find.

Folic acid, in the right degree, prevents the appearance of spina bifida in the baby.
You should see the doc though, since he'll know how much of it is good for you.

You need this! Green leafy vegetables will be your best bet. Folic acid or folate will help prevent neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. You can get folate from other sources, too, such as orange juice and cereals.
