Just be honest with your partner face to face, don`t write an e-mail or IM them the horrible news. Be straight up with them person to person, they deserve that.

Aloha! I wish I were in Hawaii now!
There is, sadly, no right or wrong way to do this. There will be pain all around, for both of you. However, you should be up front, and honest, above all. You may even find out that the other person is unhappy as well, and may be relieved at the news. I am wondering, though, about your communication levels, as if you were able to do so openly and honestly, you wouldn't be posing this question. Let the person know that though you care, you are doing this for the best of both of you, and that you are giving them wings to fly to freedom. Do it with love, and respect.
Best wishes.

You know, there really isn't a BEST way. It'll get ugly, drawn out, expensive....... no matter which way you approach it. And then all this emotional upset leads to anger, resentment, vengeful acts. What I can suggest is to go thru the process with no mudslinging, no blaming, no hurtful words, no finger pointing. Stay as neutral as humanly possible. And very importantly, if there are children involved, do not put them in the middle or make them the messengers. Do tell them it is not thier fault.
