Apart from being cheaper - indie chique!
Smith has learnt a lot from Jim Jarmusch whose black and white Stranger than Paradise was a huge indie success.
Jarmusch could have conquered Hollywood but obviously didn't want to. Smith did!

The writer and director - Kevin Smith [who also plays Silent Bob] - paid for this movie entirely with his own money and with small donations from other people.
Color is more expensive to process then black and white, thus they went with the cheaper way.

Kevin Smith did the film at a cost of $30,000, and used all of his credit cards to make the movie.
Color film is way too expensive for an independent movie so they used black and white film.
Man, just think . . . that $30,000 investment made that Jersey Boy a multi-millionaire . . . I need to think of something similar to make my millions :)

because that's the only camera he could afford. He took out a bunch of credit cards and charged the movie. That's how he got funding
