I am 20 years old and I had a tonsillectomy about a week ago. I'm starting to eat normal foods again but everything tastes really funny. Nothing I eat tastes the same and everything just seems kind of gross. Then today I had macaroni and cheese and everyone else said they turned out wrong and no one ate them but I thought they were good. What is causing everything to taste so different?

One week after tonsillectomy, you still have a "scab" on your tonsils. It takes about three weeks total for your throat to heal. The raw surface left behind from the surgery tends to have a bad odor and this can affect everything you eat (as odor is very important in taste).

Just keep the diet soft and the activity level down (no heavy lifting, etc) until you reach the 2 week mark. And be patient, the taste thing will settle out in the next two weeks.

I had a tonsillectomy when I was 15, and I could not eat for at least a week, it hurt too much! I was a virtual phlegm factory, so maybe you're producing lots of this as well, which could change the taste of the food. Or maybe they scraped off some taste buds while they were in there.

I experienced the same thing... Everything had a metalic taste for a few weeks. Just remember that they used heat to close the wounds after removing your tonsils, so you have scabs and possibly some light bleeding which can impact your taste buds.

Not to mention that I'm sure your diet while you were healing didn't include a lot of salt or sugar. Your body has to readjust.
