WW II veterans have always commented on the History channel about the horrible smell of burning flesh. (fallen soldiers)

The smell of rotting flesh...like when an animal is killed on the side of the road, and you smell it whenever you drive by. Or worse, my dog used to kill rats in the yard, then bury them like rawhide bones. The putrid smell would seep up out of the shallow "grave" my dog buried the dead rat in.

Pheeew!

It is very subjective, but personally I think it would be ethanethiol. It is simply ethanol (the alcohol in beverages) with its oxygen replaced by a sulphur. I've worked with this substance once, and it has a VERY VERY strong and irritating odour that lingers for hours. It's like skunk spray plus natural gas (actually ethanthiol is added to natural gas to allow olfactory detection) plus rotten eggs.
