Whether it is cordless or has a wire, the optic mouse uses a powerful light beam to sense when it is being moved. They are very precise and there is no ball to remove and clean.
The functions are the same as a ball mouse, at least they were for the ones I looked at. Scroll with the wheel on top, right click, left click, mine has a third button on the left that can be programmed to any of the normal mousy functions you wish. I set mine as "control" so I can push it and that right key
to cut, copy, paste, print, etcetera.
I have a logitech cordless and it is very comfortable to the hand. A friend of mine prefers a mouse that has a ball on the top and you move the ball with your finger or thumb so the mouse does not have to move it stays in one spot.
I think even that is optical.
Hope that helps

Wow, it is amazing how little most people know about these - I'm glad you asked this question, because at least you're asking for the answer: everyone else who has answered so far has no idea what they are talking about (except for mindbender). Optical mice do NOT use a laser, just a bright light (usually red). the word 'optical' also has nothing to do with the mouse being cordless or wireless - an 'optical' mouse is simply a mouse which uses a light and a sensor rather than a ball and rollers - for wireless mice, you need to look for the word 'wireless' (amazingly enough.)

It uses an optical "laser beam" for the movement of the cursor on the screen other than the simple mouse that uses the motion of ball to move the cursor.
When the optical mouse is moved on the surface the optical beam comes out of the mouse and is reflected back to the mouse. The corrosponding mechanical motion of the beam is transformed into electric codes and the cursor moves on the screen.

its not just red light. its infrared light. but not all d red light in ur mouse is infrared d bright ones is just a light to make it look much cooler. and u cant use opt mouse dat uses infrared in a shiny or glossy surface coz it will not reflect d infrared properly back into d mouse. but opt mouse w/c uses laser can... actually u can operate it in watever u wnt, its expensive though.

they're better than a mouse with a ball cos you don't have to clean them and you can use it on pretty much any surface as its a laser. much much better than a ball mouse

It's more comfortable because you can move it wherever you want and you don't have to clean it very often because there is no ball inside.
