I knew of the Man in Black for a long long time but I've only started paying attention to his music about five years ago. The reason I didn't pay him much attention was because he was labeled country and I really deslike country music. As you can guess, it was when I heard "Hurt" that I realized how amazing he was. I don't mind Willie Nelson to much but pretty much everything else seems pretty bad. Any other suggestions on who else might be as good as Johnny Cash? I like things that are deep and meaningfull...

If you like Johnny Cash, then
Merle Haggard

I'm not sure why everybody just continued to go ahead a list Kenny Chesney and Tanya Tucker and just about every other typical country artist you'd expect, since you excplicity stated you dislike country music...

but, my ex boyfriend like rock and rap--- he hated country.
however, he loved Merle Haggard. There are a lot of similarities between Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash
In fact, they were close friends.

All of Merle's songs were deep and meaningful, but I don't think you'll find anyone as good as Johnny Cash, since there is always differences that are hard to classify as better or worse between artists ;)

Just a quick note to tell you that it was Johnny Cash who helped Kris get started in the business. I wasn't there of coarse however I've read this and heard it several times. I like Kris Kristofferson as well. He is probably my favorite. I grew up listening to Johnny Cash also so I really like him alot too. After hearing about Johnny helping Kris get started I always wondered if "Beat the Devil" was about the two of them. Kris wrote so many great songs himself he needed not steal one. (Yet that's what the words say.) Johnny had already gained his popularity, I could see him giving one (song) up to a friend ; or just to help someone out. It's hard to say one person is the greatest as everyone has different taste's. For example I wouldn't put David Allen Coe in the same category as Kris Kristofferson (even though they are both "outlaws") I definitely hold much higher regards for Kris. I on the other hand haven't heard but a few of Coe's songs. The ones I have heard would not compare to Johnny or Kris. HOWEVER, I won't knock Coe anymore if you don't knock Johnny. See my point?

Dwight Yoakam is a great singer. There was a great singer named Hal Ketchum too. It depends on what kind of singing you are into. These are singers from the 80's.
If you want to go backward you might check out George Jones. Eddie Rabbit, Ronnie Milsap. Merle Haggard is right up there with Johnny Cash musically wise. As is Waylon Jennings. Buck Owens has a style that he had created of his own known as the Bakersfield sound. The first singer I named Dwight Yoakam has recorded with Buck on a few projects. You might want to check out "Streets Of Bakersfield", it's got a Tex-Mex feel to it. Going backwards there is a legend called Ernest Tubb, who made famous a song called "Walking The Floor Over You", or Marty Robbins who made popular the song "El Paso". "El Paso" is GOLD!!!!!
There are so many more singers I would be here all night listing them all. AND THEY'RE ALL GOOD!!!!!

I never thought Johnny Cash was a great singer. I think George Jones is. To me, he is the epitamy of country singers. Then theres alot of other great singers like Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley,Brooks & Dunn, Alabama, Gary Stewart, Conway Twitty, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Loretta Lynn, Martina McBride, Hank Williams Jr., Ronnie Milsap, Charlie Rich, Kenny Rogers, T.G. Sheppard and the list goes on.

Guessing you prefer pop music? I liked Loretta Lynn's album that she did w/ the White Stripes.
I also LOVE Dolly Parton. I guess it's a different feel than Johnny Cash. Honestly, if you're a straight guy looking for moody music, maybe those aren't your best bets.
But it's country, and I really like those two, but I'm not super-big on country in general.
I linked the WS/LL colaboration video below.
