I asked the same thing 3 weeks back.... following was the most convincing answer i got, though I think there is still a better explanation. Hope it helps you.

"usually, the name/logo of the watchmaker is located top center (12 noon) - the hands at 10:10 allow the name to show, and provide a nice 'frame' on both sides to highlight it. "

aw heck....now why would you ask something like that.....now you done got ME curious....I have NEVER noticed or heard of such....went online and looked at some watches...and darn if they don't show 10:10:36...well just so you know I got you on my watch list I HAVE to know that answer...
someone said that it may be because of JFK's death...http://www.nytimes.com/learning/general/onthisday/991122onthisday_big.html#article this news article says he died around 1pm...so...the question goes on....
