Who thinks the perfomance of Russel Crowe in A Beautiful Mind was better than Denzel Washington's in Training Day? Who do you think wants 10 points, I mean is the better actor? :-)

About 1st comment. I agree, Washington always plays these get angry easily, tough guy roles. It's like the same guy in every movie. Russel on the other hand does so many different things. He can play a tough guy, Gladiator, or he can play a mental guy, Beautiful Mind, or he can be a sane scared guy in The Insider.

I think it's always difficult to compare performances, and call one "better" or "best." Apples and oranges, isn't it? I just didn't care much for "Training Day" as a film. I felt as though the director couldn't decide which movie he wanted to make: the one about a veteran cop showing "tough love" to a raw rookie, or the more conventional film about a corrput cop.

I think Russell Crowe is generally terrific -- definitely one of the true "actor's actors" out there -- and I've always felt that his performance in "The Insider" was his best work. An incredibly detailed piece of acting. No knock on Denzel Washington, but I think Crowe has demonstrated considerably more variety in his performances.

And, as long as we're banging on the Academy...how in God's name did Adrien Brody win an Oscar in the same year when Daniel Day-Lewis was nominated for "Gangs of New York"?! I thought that Bill the Butcher was one of the most amazing performances I'd ever seen on film. Of course, I thought the same thing about Dustin Hoffman's Ratso Rizzo in "Midnight Cowboy"...and John Wayne won the Oscar that year!

I don't think Russell Crowe acted better that Denzel Washington.
If you notice, RC had more possibilities of the prize, because traditionally the roles of "victims" have more possibilities to win (just check all the winner in the last 30 years and you can find all kind of sufferings in roles of the actors/actresses who won).

I like DW in Training Day because he gives you the doubt until the end if he is a bad guy or he HAS TO BE a bad guy, he keeps you thinking all the movie. Good movie.

I think russel crowe without a doubt! He is just fantastic in that movie (and also really good in gladiator too) although I must say that Denzel Washington is also a great actor (even though he always seems to play a very similar role in movies?)
