Do we exist or are we a figment of our own imagination? Are we, or should I say, am I perhaps the only being here and just making things up as I go along?

It's possible that we all exist, just as we appear to. It's also possible that you are just a brain floating in a tank on some distant planet, and aliens are simulating everything you think is real. (In this scenario, wires are sticking out of your brain and are hooked up to a computer, of course.)

Either one is possible. But does it make any difference in how you choose to behave?

No. You are unlikely to decide to stop eating simply on the off chance that your entire reality is simulated. (Of course, if the aliens turn off the computer, then the world will vanish and you'll be none the wiser.)

The question therefore, although not meaningless, has no bearing on the way you lead (or seem to lead) your life.

The question is not meaningless because admitting this possibility is a first step towards the realization that in life, there is no absolute certainty of anything. You can always be wrong, no matter how impossible it may seem to be that you are.

If everybody understood this, there would be a lot less suffering in this world.

Don't worry, there are still some thinkers out there, you are not alone. I do think our reality is dimentional. Science is already proving that with string theory. we don't understand it yet, but they know dimentions exist. crazy huh? so in a way, we may only be energy, and awareness. but that can still be real. like the movie the matrix. The actual matrix was a phony world, but the expieriences had there were very real. And the "world" they created was a real creation, weather made up of energy or computors, or whatever. I think we will all come to understand these things together, in the same era, and some thinkers now , like you, are preparing us for the shift in thought. But ANYways, your definateley not the only being expieriencing all this.... I just know that. ya know? check out the website of the author Stuart Wilde. And if you can, read his best seller : "Infinate self" you would love him.

yep, you are PERHAPS dreaming the life you're experiencing here. But it doesn't change the fact that since you can think (or can you?) and ask that kind of questions, then you obviously exist in a form or another, somewhere, somehow...

And as for the existence of other people, you can only speculate. You'll never be sure. Maybe you are a figment of my imagination. I'll never know for sure. (but I'll assume you're not...)

Uh-oh. You need to do more reading on Existentialism. It will take ages for me to argue on this matter. Existentialism is a philosophical movement that is generally considered a study that pursues meaning in existence and seeks value for the existing individual.

However I'll give you the easy way out for you to investigate more on this issue by giving you the wikipedia link on Existentialism.

I learn philosophy for my last 2 semester. And yes, the question of 'do we exist?' is in our term paper, believe it or not.

And for the people out there who thinks that this is not an interesting or a useless question, THINK again.

I would think if you were the only being here and making stuff up you would be the ruler of the universe and everyone else would be your slave. The existance of hardship and pain, as well as our ability to empathize with the hardships others face, is the greatet advocacy for existance over the imagination scenario

Even if it's in our minds, yes - we do exist. Existence can be based on physical "reality" but mental reality is valid too. That's why things seem so real in dreams. It's when you wake up that you realize it... maybe we haven't woken up yet. Either way, we exist.
