I assume you have central air since you said the unit was not blowing out hot air outside. That must mean your fan is working but your compressor isn't. to be sure grab the large diameter copper line, that is the suction line to the compressor if it isn't sweating and is warm then your compressor isn't working. Could be something as simple as a wire to the compressor being broken or loose or the start/run capacitor is shot. Freon could also be to low and the compressor is out on thermal overload. In any case you will probably need a service tech to correct the problem.

If it's a window unit, and you've been using it heavily, or nonstop, it might be as simple as it froze up. Peer around inside for ice on the works, and let it thaw out a bit now and then, if that's it. Also, change the filter according to the manufaturer instructions, usually every month or three. Check the breaker for the a/c's circuit. And if that's not doing it for you, get an a/c person to look at it. They do wear out after a while, after all.

If you are talking about a central unit;either the fan is not working (no air blowing) or you are low on freon or your compressor is not pumping(outside air blowing but not hot ) in either case you will need a lisensed repairman to fix.I am assumeing you reset your breakers(the compressor usualy is seperate from the fans)

if the fan isn't running, then no noise or air movement, if it is, the condenser is out
