Are you talking about a houseplant or other potted plant, or are you planting it in the ground?
In any case, you should find out what they requirements of your particular plant are. Does it need bright sun, filtered light, shade? Most plants need to have soil that is moist but not soggy. The quality of the soil, whether in the ground or in pots, is important. If it is in a pot, don't use garden soil; buy a good potting soil. If you are planting the plant in the ground, amend the soil by adding some compost, which will help feed the plant as well as improving the soil structure and drainage. Plants in pots need good drainage so that the roots don't rot from excessive moisture, so use a pot that has a drainage hole in it. Most plants will want some fertilizer on a regular basis; you can ask in a plant nursery or garden supply store for a type of fertilizer that is appropriate for your plant, and follow the package directions.

Use a GOOD potting soil. Make sure the pot has drain holes in it. If the pot you want to use has one of those snap-on tray on the bottom, remove it. Use one of the plastic saucer which are designed with ridges in the bottom under your plant. More plants die from over waterin and sittin g in excess water than they do from under watering, Now, clean the pot throughly add soil , place plnt in hollowed out spot in center of soil Then add soil to within about 1/2 in. from the rim. Pack soil down firmly around the plant. Do not raise soil on the plant any higher than it was originally. Water well. Fertilze moderately about every two weeks.

depends on the plant. some plants are more fussy than others (azaleas). some plants like the worst possible soils and the hottest summers while others like well drained acidic soils (not my favs.). if you are after a plant that is the least fussy (you could never water it and leave it in a dark corner of a room and it will still live) snake plant also called mother in laws tongue. check books and your local nursery for more details.
