He did, he was an example of a project child. Focused at a very young age, his father dedicated half his life to make this boy what he is now. Set pieces and passing is something that you need to practice, and Beckham do (did) it religiously. Of course, it also require an excellent court vision. What makes it sometimes hard to digest to people like you is that Beckham's skill is very limited. He doesn't have pace, his marking and tackling are horrendous at best, and his dribbling is average. But his court vision, passing, crossing and set pieces can change the course of the game, and when he was at his best, that can prove costly.

""David Beckham is Britain's finest striker of a football not because of God-given talent but because he practises with a relentless application that the vast majority of less gifted players wouldn't contemplate."

It's all about the British press! Whatever is theirs they praise to the heavens. There are 1001 better players than Beckham who are not given the same publicity Beckham enjoys to make him a great football player and yet outclass him in the game.

By practicing a lot. He practiced a lot of set pieces. He's a very good playmaker. It's also the positive influence of Sir Alex and being the replacement of Eric Cantona was a huge pressure on him. He grew up with his mistakes like the sending off against Argentina in the world cup. It's not only practice he got the talent and the will at first then with practice he got better...

Though a very good striker of a "dead ball" which he did practice endlessly to improve, I would certainly never put him in the "great" class. He got himself, possibly through his pop star wife, a fantastic agent that markets him magnificently and feeds this to the gullible media and people that do not understand the game very well. He cannot header, tackle or kick with his left foot, need I say more. He was signed by Real Madrid as a business acquisition to sell their strips and other fan items.
