If i buy a cell phone on ebay is there any way to know if it will work w/ my network (Verizon)?

Yes, if the phone says "unlocked" it will accept a SIM card from any wireless carrier (Cingular, Verizon, US Cellular, etc).

The unlocked phones are a little more expensive, but they are virtually guaranteed to work for you.
