My niece and nephew say their mother emotionally abuses them. She also keeps them in their house and has them do chores from 7 a.m till bed which is priority over school work during school. She moves them and hides them from us (Dad's amily). Their Dad is no longer a part of their lives' so I am lost on what I can do to help them. Next school year they begin homeschooling; my niece starts high school next year. They are both against it but fear saying that to their Mom in fear of punishment. They both want to live with me or their grandmother but we are at loss of what we can do according to California law. They also say their Mother does drugs but I have no physical proof of anything. Help please
My niece is cutting on herself and is depressed, my nephew has ADHD which she refuses to treat
They are 12 and 14

You can call the the child abuse hotline and report the situation. They will take the report anonymously, and then investigate. I believe that all states have one or more of these hotlines.

If you cannot find this number, then calling the local police with your suspicions would be in order.

Another number to try is 1-800-4 A CHILD. They will be able to coordinate some help.

Don't let this continue.

Ok. Lets say you are wrong. During the investigation, they will determine the exact state of affairs, follow up once or twice, and then if there really isn't a problem, or the problem has resolved itself (amazing what a kind chat from the authorities can do) then they may let it drop. It is better to be safe than sorry, especially with the information you have given.

The only option I can see you have is to tell the police. Go and get a professional to help you draft a letter, then make an appintment with your local MP. See him/her and send a copy to the police commissioner also. Maybe you should also alert the mental health authorities in your state. Ask your MP for other avenues you could take and never stop attacking the problem. It sounds as though the kids' could be in some sort of peril here. Good luck Johnno

Children protection service in california must investigate any allegations made against a parent for mental abuse and drug use. If the children are talking to you or your mother than convince them to open up to children's services. It can be discreet and you can be assured that cps will take notice of niece cutting herself and allegations of drug use by mom

Before any more damage is done call children and family service to do a call on the home. Be sure your attorney
goes along with the case manager assigned to this case.
Should the children be pulled out of the home the attorney is their to represent the children's welfare and yours for possible guardianship of them. Do everything in order with an attorney there on your behalf as well.

report the cutting get the child help through DSS, as for home schooling, it isn't allowed for high school in most states. and if the children are that old, then they have the right to say what is happenning and where they want to live if you can get child protective services or dss to look into it.

I would have the kids start telling people about their mom. You can also talk to social services about what can be done, and if you are that concerned about it wait till the mom slips up and report her a**. Above all pray about it
