I was wondering if anyone knows of a website where I can find the origin of common phrases, such as "raining cats and dogs" or "spitting image" and such. I am a teacher and would like to share with my kids.

You have a good selection so far. I searched Google for idiomatic expressions and found several prospective sites. Here is one for teachers:

http://www.wordorigins.org/ appears pretty good, and has an explanation for both your phrases.

Alternatively, if you need more in-depth information about a specific subject (such as raining animals) you could check out en.wikipedia.org - a very large online encyclopedia.

"Spitting image" comes from "spirit and image," so as to say that someone is the spirit and image of someone else.
