Death is as old as time and among the top ten phobias, the fear of death ranks 2nd. Most people fear this because they do not fully understand its occurance and cause, and it is in our nature to fear what we do not comprehend. One of the factors that make a human fear death is the fact that no one lives to tell what is behind it. In short, someone has to experience death first before fully understanding it. quite ironic i say.

"In a word, neither death, nor exile, nor pain, nor anything of this kind, is the real cause of our doing or not doing any action, but our opinions and the decisions of our will." from a Stoic.
I don't think Stoics were saying that Man fears death in particularly but that death is one of many things that Humankind uses to avoid the activities that help us achieve our full potential.

You wanna know why we fear death? Because if we didn't, people would be killing themselves left and right, all the time. Nobody would have any regards for human life... that would just be weird. Anyway, it makes sense, and it's short and simple - TO KEEP US ALIVE. We're meant to be alive, and on this earth (for some reason), and our bodies and our minds are programed to fear death. So live, and love where you live.
