I'm pretty sure the exact dates depend on the schools. You should check out the school's website. I will be attending Keele University in September on exchange. Their semester is:
Autumn Semester
Monday 25 September 2006 to Friday 19 January 2007 inclusive
Christmas Vacation
Saturday 16 December 2006 to Sunday 7 January 2007 inclusive

In the US each school determines its own schedule. Britain has more central control so there may be a fixed nationwide break schedule. The local university would probably be the best people to ask, since I doubt the folks at the Ministry of Education would deign to answer the phone.
