Why does she feel she is being punished and where did her story go to? She is sad probably because she worked hard on a story and chapters 6-12 are now gone!!! Teach her how to set up a folder in Microsoft Word (if you have that) or another application where she can store her work and open it later. So it will not easily be deleted.
Please sit down and talk openly with her. She will respond. I love the communication I have with my daughter. I make sure I am always open to talking about anything with her. In an age appropriate way. Good Luck!

Just because it was deleted, doesn't mean the data still isn't there. Go to a computer tech support forum, you can find them online by using google.com.

Ask these people about data recovery. I know there are programs to use for free that may help your daughter recover her lost story.

If this isn't an option, then set down with her and help her rewrite the story better.

Just let her know she isn't being punished. I've had my stories eaten more than once, it happens. Just teach her how to back things up either via a floppy or if you have a CD burner...teacher her to burn a data CD. That way she'll always have a backup.

:(

That is so sad... Are you sure it can't be recovered? Did you check the recycle bin and everything? Is she sure it didn't get saved as a second document somewhere else on the computer? Did she do a search?

Well, I would say shopping spree would cheer her up if you can afford it. Perhaps some new clothes... or go shopping at a book store and then go out for coffee at Starbucks.

I hope she feels better. :(

Is this the only time she's acted depressed? Always keep the lines of communication open so she doesn't withdraw from people especially around puberty. Wouldn't hurt to have her see a counselor now as a backup in case this behavior happens again in the future.

in my opinion, best thing you could do is help. take the time to grap a pen and paper (yes paper!) and ask her to go over the main points of what she wrote down. Then go back over the points and ask for more details. Eventually she will have a skeleton of what she originally put together. Once she has that back, she will have a sence of accomplishment, and will have had an opportunity to grow closer with you.

many people like to distract, like go to the park, disneyland, etc and take their mind off it, and you can try that, but it sounds like you have a determined little girl! good luck

I don't mean to be critical, but who wrote this, the mom or the 12 year old. Spell check is a very handy tool on the computer. Until then, its very hard the figure out what you're asking.
