Although I could name some of the film classics, to me, it's all about the replay value. Many of the "great films" are really only good to watch once or once in a blue moon.

Here are some of my favorites to watch on a big screen TV with surround sound: Gladiator, V for Vendetta, Alien(s), The Matrix, Fight Club, The Usual Suspects, Sin City, The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy (but especially The Two Towers), The Godfather Trilogy, The Indiana Jones Trilogy, and The Star Wars Trilogy (not the prequels, although they'd round out the collection).

Blazing Saddles - still edgy and funny to this day.

Kill Bill Vol 1 &2 (Especially Volume 1)
Equilibrium because I think it is brilliant
Memento (if you haven't seen it, its a must)
House of Flying Daggers
(of course the Lord of the Rings, but I assume you have them)
Godfather 1&2
But as far as NEW releases, I havent seen too many new releases that are a must have. Movies are like music, it depends on what mood you are in, is the type of movie you wish to view.

But as one person put it, it depends on what you like. Get stuff that you like and when in doubt, read reviews on sites like imdb.com.
