I'm looking for strategies, vocabulary, rank, cause and effect, transportation, information interception and transfer, search parties, recons, missions, anything that would help me get a better understanding of war to the very detailed base so I can write a war story.

Talk with as many veterans as you can, jotting down notes as you ask all the particulars as you've expressed in your question here.

Military lingo generally stays the same throughout the modern wars we've experienced except for the food rations and uniforms and equipment utilized. Each armed service has different rank insignia for the enlisted and the U.S. Navy's rank structure can be daunting to learn at first.

One of the first questions you might ask a veteran is what arm he belonged to, such as infantry, armor, artillery, signal communications, etc. Then you can hone in on deeper particulars.

Yours is a great challenge. Good luck.
